About Michael Dereza

Michael Dereza is a Toronto-based digital artist whose practice investigates the intersection of geometric abstraction, algorithmic generation, and perceptual psychology. Drawing on over three decades of artistic inquiry, Dereza creates complex visual fields that challenge the viewer’s sense of space and stability.

The Work Influenced by the legacy of Op Art and Systems Art, Dereza treats the pixel not just as a screen element, but as a unit of digital materiality. His work—spanning series such as Chromatic Vortex, Fractured Symmetry, and Urban Myth—explores the tension between rigid geometric structures and the fluidity of light. By combining algorithmic processes with meticulous manual post-processing, he avoids the sterility of automated filters, preserving a nuanced, human hand in the digital realm. The result is work that vibrates with optical intensity, inviting sustained viewing and shifting perceptions.

Background

Born in Charleroi, Belgium, and of Ukrainian heritage, Michael now lives and works in Toronto. He holds a degree in History and Fine Art from the University of Toronto and furthered his design studies at Sheridan College. His foundational practice in acrylic and mixed media on canvas informs his digital work, bringing a painterly sensitivity to color and composition.
